St. Lucia and Mtubatuba

Monday 5th April 2010

I showered with hot water today (still feels like a novelty!) and we were taken for an amazing English breakfast. I commented that the past 24 hours felt to be a bit like how being released from prison might feel. Patrick responded that my parole may be revoked shortly. This is because after breakfast we hired a car from Durban airport to explore the east side of the country for a few days. I drove our rubbish Toyota Yaris up to St. Lucia via the N2, through the KwaZulu-Natal countryside and Zululand, which are green verdant and hilly - not dissimilar to English countryside.

The roads on the way up there were full of toll roads with seemingly arbitrary toll charges, although they were cheap. There were also numerous people lining the motorway awaiting lifts from buses, hitch-hiking or attempting to sell a range of items including bowls of food and in one case a bag of unidentified brown powder!

We arrived in the tropical-feeling St. Lucia and walked around the town. We had lunch on the main road, McKenzie Street:

We then drove to nearby Mtubatuba and the Khumbalani Lodge, our home for the next three nights. This area is very humid and pushing 30 degrees. The hostel, like Bob's, is clean and pleasant and run by a friendly white couple named Kay and John.

Mtubatuba also feels tropical and contains very dense and green vegetation. We were advised of a good local restaurant and went there to find it was actually a sports club and function venue.
